Visiting the Great Wall is a highlight of almost every first trip to Beijing — but there is not just one “Great Wall.”
Different sections offer very different experiences. Some are easier to reach, some are quieter and more scenic, while others are better for hiking or photography.
Here is a simple guide to four of the most popular choices around Beijing.
1. Mutianyu Great Wall
Best for: First-time visitors and families
Mutianyu is probably the easiest recommendation for most international travelers.
Why we like it
- Beautiful mountain scenery
- Usually less crowded than Badaling
- Well restored and comfortable to walk
- Cable car available
- Good balance between scenery, accessibility and visitor facilities
Things to consider
It is farther from central Beijing than Badaling, so transportation needs a little more planning.
Our recommendation:
If you are visiting the Great Wall for the first time and simply want a beautiful, comfortable experience, Mutianyu is usually the safest choice.
2. Badaling Great Wall
Best for: Convenience and first-time sightseeing
Badaling is the most famous and one of the most developed sections of the Great Wall.
Advantages
- Relatively easy to reach from Beijing
- Excellent visitor facilities
- Cable cars and other convenient options available
- A classic, well-restored Great Wall experience
Disadvantages
The biggest issue is simple: crowds.
During weekends, Chinese public holidays and peak travel seasons, Badaling can become extremely busy.
Choose Badaling if: convenience is your main priority and you do not mind a more popular tourist environment.
3. Jinshanling Great Wall
Best for: Hiking and photography
If you want something quieter and more adventurous, Jinshanling is one of the best options.
Advantages
- Fewer visitors
- Beautiful mountain views
- A mix of restored and more natural-looking sections
- Excellent for hiking and photography
Disadvantages
It is farther from Beijing and requires more walking than Mutianyu or Badaling.
This is not necessarily the best choice for travelers with limited mobility or families with very young children.
Choose Jinshanling if: you enjoy hiking, photography and a quieter atmosphere.
4. Simatai Great Wall
Best for: A different Great Wall experience
Simatai is known for its dramatic mountain setting and more rugged appearance.
One particularly interesting feature is the opportunity to experience the Great Wall in the evening when night access is available.
Advantages
- Dramatic scenery
- Less commercial feeling than Badaling
- Can be combined with nearby Gubei Water Town
- Unique evening atmosphere
Disadvantages
It is relatively far from central Beijing, so it works better as a full-day trip rather than a quick half-day excursion.
Choose Simatai if: you want something a little different from the classic daytime Great Wall visit.
The Great Wall is not just something to “check off” your Beijing itinerary.
Choosing the right section can completely change the experience.
For first-time visitors, we generally recommend Mutianyu. For hikers and photographers, Jinshanling may be more rewarding. And if convenience matters most, Badaling remains a practical choice.
Whatever you choose, give yourself enough time to slow down, look at the mountains, and actually enjoy being on the Wall.
